Job 1:22 – September 26, 2022

In all this Job did not sin, nor did he charge God with wrong. Job 1:22 NABRE

The story of Job, an innocent, is a parable about a man who God claims to be one of the best in the world, while satan indicates this is because nothing bad happens to him. Satan goes on to say if all he had is taken from him, then Job would sin and curse God. God gives satan the power to inflict suffering on Job, allowing satan a chance to prove his point. Job loses his farm animals, his children, and appears to have lost everything, yet as we read in the quoted verse Job does not sin or curse God. It seems a funny story and hard to understand why God would allow such suffering for one of His creations, particularly one who He thinks has no equal on earth. But it provides a backdrop for friends coming to try to influence Job, never changing his mind. Job for his part wants to hear from God, not from others. God eventually answers Job and, in the end, restores all his fortunes.

Overall this book doesn’t answer any questions about suffering or why it exists. It explains nothing and provides no therapeutic support for the troubles of life. It does seem to call us to a place of descent so that we turn to God. When all is well, we don’t seem to need God. But we discover there is a certain truth and we are realigned with truth when we reach out to God. We can’t exist just to acquire and die leaving all we have acquired; much more is to be learned in life and connection to the Creator is necessary to learn this truth.

Have you suffered in your life as an innocent? Do you question God when things go wrong?

There is a certain truth and we are realigned with truth reaching out to God. We can’t exist just to acquire and die leaving all we have acquired; more must be learned in life and connection to the Creator is necessary to learn this truth. Click To Tweet
