Ephesians 3:8 – October 19, 2022

To me, the very least of all the holy ones, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the inscrutable riches of Christ, Ephesians 3:8 NABRE

Paul in a letter to the community at Ephesus speaks about the grace he received to preach, and in particular to preach to the gentiles, the non-Jews. Paul often seems a man with a big ego, but if you become familiar with Paul in all his writing you may discover it is not ego but a true sense of who he has become through God’s grace. Here we read he declares himself the least of all those chosen by Christ but he feels confident enough in knowing that God chose him to be a preacher and to take the message outside the community of the chosen people. It is recognizing this grace that gives Paul the confidence to know, as fact , God wants him to be this preacher. Followers of Christ require faith, there is nothing we can touch or see that proves Christ exists, we must go into our hearts and see what we believe. But Paul, who spends years walking around Asia, preaching the message of Christ has the confidence of surety his message is from Christ and is for everyone.

Jesus spoke to many saying “Blessed are the poor in Spirit.” Reading this we may think it is about others, but in fact it is all of us. It is a message aimed at those floundering in life, or who are poor, or sick, or dejected, which at certain times is all of us. Jesus is saying be of good cheer, you are deeply loved and chosen by God with given grace. Jesus’ message is to be happy you are so special. Paul recognized this and put this into action. We to should act to give a message of cheer to others, we all need uplifting, we should recognize we are loved and love others.

What message do you spread each day? Do you recognize your blessings?
