I went up in accord with a revelation, and I presented to them the gospel that I preach to the Gentiles—but privately to those of repute—so that I might not be running, or have run, in vain. Galatians 2:2 NABRE
Paul explains to the community of Galatia that he goes to see the pillars of the “Christian” movement in Jerusalem. He is speaking to the leaders, James, Peter and John, concerning what God has revealed to him about preaching to the Gentiles. Paul challenges the conventional thinking of the leaders who believe followers of Christ are required to be Jews in order to join the movement. Paul feels traditional Jewish statues and laws are not necessary to hear and follow Jesus’ message.
In the telling of the journey, Paul mentions he spoke to those of repute privately. It is Interesting he would mention this and I have to wonder if it is not a little sarcastic. Does Paul think these leaders are not as committed to the message as they are to their own reputations? If they are trying to spread the message of Jesus worldwide they should not need convincing from Paul to make it as easy as possible for all people to follow. Christians today have great admiration for these leaders, their commitment led to incredible growth and sharing of Jesus’ message. But we see over and over again they are flawed people, as are we all. If we ever doubt that we have an important role in the world we just have to remember what these flawed people accomplished. Use your gifts and flaws to make change.
What are your flaws? Do you feel you are able to be great?
