Job 3:11 – September 27, 2022

Why did I not die at birth, come forth from the womb and expire? Job 3:11 NABRE

Job seems to go through the stages of grief and dying: denial, anger, bargaining, resignation and acceptance. After his loss of everything he remains in silence, it is his denial; then he reaches the anger stage, wondering why he should be happy about being born. He is in darkness, the clouds hanging over him, the light is blocked, God is a light he no longer sees. We probably have to have experienced some sort of depression or betrayal to understand his feeling. There is something in us that experiences sadness, not every day is goodness. If we are willing to participate in the world, part of us will suffer a kind of despair. If we want to walk in solidarity with much of the world, we must allow grace to lead us through life events that are not happy. Without sadness we can’t know gladness. We must go through the stages of feeling not only the last death but little deaths along the way. If we abort these feelings they will come out in a deeper form, disguised another way; ulcers, depression, irritability, misdirected anger. If we refuse to let emotions run their course, we end up sharing them inappropriately.

It is good to express emotion as Job is showing us in speaking up about his anger. We need to release things so that they don’t build up in us. Job is not afraid to feel his feelings. He acts and speaks them out. Allow your emotions to run their course, they are not right or wrong, or have no moral meaning, they are merely indicators of what is happening.

How do you handle your emotions? Have you experienced loss like Job?

If we abort feelings they will come out in a deeper form, disguised another way; ulcers, depression, irritability, misdirected anger. If we refuse to let emotions run their course, we end up sharing them inappropriately. Click To Tweet
