1 Corinthians 2:3 – August 29, 2022

I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling 1 Corinthians 2:3 NABRE

Paul is not on a pedestal, not bringing a message of his own, he shares Christ’s message. Paul does not speak with an eloquent voice, he does not speak powerfully, rather Paul recognizes he is weak and afraid. Many scholars look at Paul’s messages and find in them a man who by human standards would not be memorable and certainly not someone who could create church community on top of church community and perhaps seen as the true founder of the church itself. We read from Paul himself that he is not the one leading or bringing people to Christ, it is the message itself. Paul trusts the message and lives in such a way people see him demonstrating power and spirit. He says those listening should not have faith in human wisdom, particularly any wisdom they think he provides, but people should depend on the power of the Spirit of God. Even Jesus in His lifetime never declares Himself God but always points to the Father, God is the one who brings Him honor. The church declares Jesus is God, but Jesus only says the Father and I are One. (John 10:30)

Peter tells us we have a divine nature (2 Peter 1:4), when we look within, accepting the divine within we are aware God is in us. Paul knows it, Jesus knows it and we should accept it as well. Like Paul we are weak and fearful, even to the point of trembling. When we see the success of others, we should look at them with joy knowing they too are weak and fearful, yet they push through these impediments to success, trusting the divine within them. Jesus is the Word we should hear and accept, which leads to the power of God within us.

Do you recognize your divine nature? Are you afraid others will see your weakness and fear?
