John 20:31 – April 24, 2022

But these are written that you may [come to] believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name. John 20:31 NABRE

John closed out his gospel by saying Jesus has done many things, all of them not captured and reported but the ones that have been captured are so reading these stories we will come to believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. John has written about love and the unity of Jesus and the Father throughout his gospel. Yet, the message John wants to leave us thinking about is that Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, the Anointed of God and the Son of God. We are all sons and daughters of God, but John intends us to think of Jesus and the Father’s relationship as much more connected, not a spiritual adoption but a physical relationship. God therefore has made His own Son the Messiah, the Christ. This of course was something done at the beginning of creation but so we may easily believe we have this transformation from Jesus to Christ at the resurrection. A human dies and enters the tomb and the Christ steps out, no longer one human but fully human and fully divine, a being able to be with everyone always, not constrained by human attributes, free to touch hearts, heads and bodies of those open to receiving the Christ.

John gives the impression the stories told were well thought out and planned for his gospel. Perhaps this is true, He lives longer than the other apostles and would have had a chance to see the gospel stories of Matthew, Mark and Luke. Much of John’s writing is different from the other three and really encircles the idea that Jesus is the Christ and with God in the beginning. Today we call this mystery, it should be enough knowing Christ can be with us and give us comfort.
