John 13:15 – April 14, 2022

I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do. John 13:15 NABRE

Jesus gathered with His disciples for a meal and following the meal Jesus gets up and washes the feet of His disciples, a gesture that is shocking and unacceptable to His disciples. Washing feet is common at the time of Jesus, the roads are dusty and most people wear sandals, therefore entering a home it is appropriate to wash your feet. In fact we read certain homes have servants who would greet you as you came in and they wash your feet. Jesus hears objections when He begins to wash the disciple’s feet because they don’t view Him as their servant. Jesus however is modelling how He wants them to think of themselves and how they should serve others. If Jesus washes their feet, they should wash each other’s feet and the feet of those who they speak to about Jesus.

Jesus’ entire life can be looked at as a model for each of us who become followers. We hear Jesus say I didn’t come to be served but to serve (Matthew 20:28) and this is how Jesus wants all followers to behave. We are called to serve others in love and compassion. If we all love like Jesus and serve one another, virtually all suffering would be eliminated. Suffering comes from sin, things like greed and attachment. If we eliminate sin and we serve each other we can eliminate all suffering. Even physical pain would be less impactful if we are surrounded and assisted by Jesus wannabes who love fully. No service is beneath Jesus and therefore no service should be beneath us. We should all do as Jesus has done. We are meant to transform the world and it is in humble servitude that the change occurs.

Have you washed another person’s feet? Do you model Jesus in your discipleship?
