and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.” Mark 1:38 NABRE
Jesus often goes off by Himself to pray, communing with His Father privately. On this occasion Jesus leaves everyone and is off by Himself and Simon Peter, one of the men selected to be a close follower and partner of Jesus, is sent to find Him. They have not been together very long but the disciples have come to see Jesus as critical in their life. Jesus has selected these disciples and now they are looking for Him because He answers their deepest longings. It is as if they’re unable to survive without Jesus and the search for Him is like young lovers always seeking one another, or the image of Israel’s spousal love for the Father. The words of Peter, when he finds Jesus, is very telling, everyone one is looking for you, they can be applied very broadly, everyone is looking for Jesus whether they know it or not. After hearing Peter Jesus replies, let us go, including all of them in the mission He has come to ignite and accomplish. Together they begin a Jesus movement that changes the world and continues today without any evidence of ever ending until Jesus Himself declares it accomplished.
We all need to look for Jesus, not to simply find him but to go deeper and deeper in the life He has come to witness. Many disciples meet Jesus and have a sort of new birth into a life they have never shown interests in prior and they continue to go deeper until there they have such a transformation they are willing to lay down their life for other. The phrase pick up your cross and follow me is a daily admonition, not a one time act. Being a friend of Jesus requires we go deeper and deeper into a life of setting our needs aside, to live wholly in the service of others. Finding Jesus will be compete life change for us.
