Mark 1:27 – January 11, 2022

All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.” Mark 1:27 NABRE

Mark writes about Jesus’ first exorcism. Jesus enters a synagogue and is teaching with authority when He is recognized by an unclean spirit within a person. The spirit recognizes and calls out to Jesus, who rebukes the spirit and commands it to leave the person and the spirit must obey. Those who witness what is happening are amazed. They see Jesus’ teaching as a new kind of teaching, not words that are spoken which are supposed to be the right words, or comfortable words saying righteous things. Jesus’ teaching has the authority of witness and power behind them. He speaks as one who believes with every fiber of His being what He is saying, He has complete faith in God and will do whatever is required to make people aware God is the source of good news. Jesus teaches the revelation of the good news of God with a plan freeing human beings from their captivity to impurity, greed, and lustfulness. Jesus frees us from the entrapment of our desires, especially for things the world wants us to desire for their benefit. We cannot be truly free if we are hooked on things we think we need, to be happy we must be hooked on the good news which actually makes us free.

The people are amazed by Jesus teaching because it has the power to accomplish what it communicates, His words do not return empty they accomplish what they are meant to accomplish. The story has the message of one person freed, dominated by impurity, but it is a message of freedom for all. We live in a system created for a few to succeed, standing on the backs of many which we accept as if it is the only way. Jesus has a better way.

What are the things taking your freedom? What desires are false in your life?
