Luke 14:11 – October 30, 2021

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Luke 14:11 NABRE

Jesus notices people choose their place at table based on honor, taking the better seats. But Jesus warns it is not good to take the best place as the host might ask you to move when someone more important arrives. This is practical advice but for Jesus this reversal, taking the lowest place, is more common in His teaching and thinking. Jesus teaches the last shall be first and the first shall be last. The kingdom of God is a kingdom where the least are honored above all others and those who expect the highest place become the least. Additionally, Jesus points out those who exalt themselves will be humbled and those who are humble will be exalted. Honor is defined differently in the kingdom of God comparing to the kingdom of humanity. In the world we think honor is taken or declared upon us. We are successful when we climb to the top of our field, or have the most money, or are the most famous. But in the kingdom of God it is living in humility and being humble that are attributes bringing exaltation. To be raised up in the kingdom of God we must be humble.

This is not just something Jesus teaches, it is how He lives. Paul writes, “… he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,” Philippians 2:8-9. We honor Jesus as the Son of God, fully human and fully divine. But no matter who He is or whose He is, we would know Him because of how He lives, with humility and humbleness. If we live humbly we will be a great instrument for God who will greatly exult us and bestow on us a name above many others.

Do you know how to be humble? What is your impression of humble people?
