Luke 12:57 – October 22, 2021

Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? Luke 12:57 NABRE

Jesus has spoken to the crowds about being faithful servants, and with this instruction He tells them they should be aware of the times. As there are signs when the weather will change, His presence and message should be a sign the current era is changing. The present time is the time when God has chosen to walk among His creation, the creator becomes one like the creatures. Unfortunately, the creatures want to reject this time and keep their own power, waiting for a messiah who will be molded more in their image, a conquering hero, one who will defeat the oppressors and bring power to the Jews. Jesus knows their thoughts and tells them they need to judge for themselves what is right. Is their way right or is God’s way right? Jesus wants them to understand they cannot depend on a good judgement if they go in front of the judge, rather they should make amends with whomever they have difficulties and settle their disputes themselves. Leaving judgment to the final days only risks a penalty that requires every debt to be repaid and every wrong righted. Of course Jesus is speaking about sin and repentance. If people do not repent there is a risk we will be judged as we deserve, not mercifully. God is merciful but God expects us to do our part, we must change our ways and become followers who serve others, looking to seek forgiveness and to forgive those times we have been wronged.

Jesus expects us to know what is right. We have the knowledge of Jesus’ mission and we know how Jesus wants us to be disciples who serve and love others. God is a God of mercy, and we receive mercy when we give mercy. Jesus is saying now is the time for us to be merciful.

Are you aware of the time we are in? Do you seek settlement before judgement?
