Mark 10:45 – October 17, 2021

For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45 NABRE

Jesus is approached by a couple of His disciples asking to be seated on His left and right when He comes into His glory. They believe Jesus will be elevated to the throne and siting right and left of Him will be positions of power. Jesus did not come to defeat the Romans and install a new form of government, Jesus came to defeat sin and bring life to humanity. Which is essentially what He is saying in the quoted passage, possibly the most important saying in the Gospels, summing up Jesus’ messianic mission. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many. Jesus’ own coming into the world was not for Himself but to serve His heavenly Father and all humanity. He shares the idea His life is a ransom, paying on behalf of another, for example to free a slave or to pay a debt another owes, but ransom is not something paid for self. Jesus will give His life, a gift of infinite value, in exchange for us.

Jesus is making a proclamation to the community, you are in the community if you are a creation of God and remain connected. There is no boundary on who is included, Jesus ransoms all creation. Jesus is reforming all people, which only happens when all people understand Jesus’ mission of service and ransom. From the beginning God has declared His message to a collective, first Israel and Jesus declares it for all nations. If we want to be ransomed then we must remain connected, not correct, but in communion. We are connected to the Body of Christ, which has room for everyone. This is not a message for an individual, it’s a ransom for all.

Are you remaining connected to the Body of Christ? Do you desire ransoming along with everyone else?

If we want to be ransomed then we must remain connected to the Body of Christ, which has room for everyone. Jesus message is not for an individual, it’s a ransom for all. Click To Tweet
