John 14:31 – May 4, 2021

but the world must know that I love the Father and that I do just as the Father has commanded me. Get up, let us go. John 14:31 NABRE

Jesus has emphasized again and again His love for the Father. He has told His disciples that to see Him is to see the Father, to follow Him is to follow the Father, to do the works of Jesus is to do the works of the Father, everything Jesus does is in the name of the Father. Now Jesus is taking it to completion, the disciples know His love for the Father and Jesus wants the world to know that He loves the Father. Jesus’ incarnation is in obedience to the Father and though God does not desire Jesus death, He hopes people will see who Jesus truly is and follow rather than destroy, but they both know the course humanity will take. Jesus’ presence is a threat to a “me first people,” He threatens selfishness, power of the few and therefore Jesus must be eliminated in order for humanity to live in its sinful nature. God can hope people will wake up and see that the path Jesus lays out is best for all, but God also knows the hearts of humans and knows they destroy what is good and innocent when it makes them uncomfortable. Knowing all this, Jesus follows the Father uncompromisingly, doing all the Father asks, Jesus even says He does all the Father commands Him.

We know with love commands are unnecessary, with love we desire to do more than the beloved asks, we want to lay our entire life down for the one we love. This is precisely what Jesus does, lives and gives His life completely for His Father. We are challenged to be like Jesus, living and giving our life for those He loves, for God and for others. Jesus tells the world He loves the Father and desires us His disciples we do the same.

What do you do for those you love? How do you show love for the Father?
