Proverbs 19:20-21 – October 10, 2020

Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may eventually become wise. Many are the plans of the human heart, but it is the decision of the LORD that endures. Proverbs 19:20-21 NABRE

Solomon has written many of the proverbs including the quoted verses. These verses advise that we should accept advice and accept discipline and by doing so people will see us as wise and we will become wise. Often when we think we know everything we really are being short sighted and somewhat naïve. It is always the wise person who will listen to others and accept challenges that train us to grow and be wise. Wisdom in biblical terms is not an intellectual statement rather it is having knowledge and knowing how to apply it. It is one thing to “know” everything, but it is the application of what we know that determines if we are a person of wisdom or not.  Wisdom is an important characteristic, we read in proverbs how wisdom was the earliest creation of God, “The LORD begot me, the beginning of his works, the forerunner of his deeds of long ago; From of old I was formed, at the first, before the earth. (Proverbs 8:22-23) Therefore we must realize that anything we can do to obtain wisdom is a prudent activity. The proverb continues to compare the human heart which can make many plans and change plans often, to the decision of God that endures, eternally. We must acquire wisdom and when we do have wisdom we will know to listen to God.

Solomon was asked by God what he wanted, God was willing to give Solomon anything he asked for and Solomon asks for wisdom. With wisdom Solomon became a great ruler and important king for the chosen people, even building the temple where God dwelled for the people. Seeking to be wise is the first step of wisdom, asking for and accepting advice is the second step.

Do you seek wisdom? Are you open to advice from others?
