Deuteronomy 13:5 – October 9, 2020

The LORD, your God, shall you follow, and him shall you fear; his commandments shall you observe, and to his voice shall you listen; him you shall serve, and to him you shall hold fast. Deuteronomy 13:5 NABRE

This passage from Deuteronomy (meaning the second law) is contained in a large group of verses (13:1-13:18) that spell out what should be done against those who promote the worship of other gods, whether they be false prophets or members of one’s own family. The harshness and exemplary nature of the penalties helps make it clear that faithfulness to the Lord is something more important than family or communal loyalties. Jesus reiterates this idea in Matthew’s gospel, “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me” (10:37.) We must make God our primary relationship with all focus and priority given to Him. The quoted verse says, we shall follow God, we shall fear God (meaning respect God) we shall follow God’s commands, we shall listen to God’s voice, we shall serve God and to God we shall be a steady companion, always following the path straight to God. It may seem odd to ignore our family putting God first, but it is through God that our family exists and all the blessings we share with them come from God. Making right relationship with God leads to God caring for all who are important to us.

Trusting and making God our life’s priority is not easy. We take responsibility for our inner circle but God helps us realize we are incapable of doing anything without God’s support. Loving our family means loving God first and depending on God to lead our family in life. Making others more important than God declares we do not love God as we should.

Is God your life’s priority. Do you respect God completely?
