Isaiah 43:11-12 – October 8, 2020

I, I am the LORD; there is no savior but me. It is I who declared, who saved, who announced, not some strange god among you; You are my witnesses-oracle of the LORD. I am God, Isaiah 43:11-12 NABRE

Isaiah in these verses proclaim God’s special love for His people. In the opening verses Isaiah uses words to describe the people from God’s perspective; my sons, my daughters, everyone who is called by my name, my witnesses, my servant who I have chosen, the titles used for God include; the Holy One of Israel, the Savior, the Lord your God and we can also read God’s actions; creation, redemption, and ransoming. All these intimate names and actions make this passage one of the most tender in its language and is explicit about God’s love. Israel discovers over and over again God’s love, mercy and forgiveness. Despite their own selfishness and falling away from God, again and again God never tires of loving His people and choosing them from among all peoples as His special ones. Thanks to the prophets of Israel the people understand that it is again out of love that God never stops saving and pardoning them for their unfaithfulness and sin. It is God alone who has the deep love and mercy to overlook so much, to constantly save and love wrong doers making them a Holy people. God is the Lord, the Savior, the one who has declared, saved and announced that He is God, their God who deeply loves his creatures.

We must recognize in this oracle from Isaiah how God wants us to know His deep and eternal love for each and every one of us. It is through action we see God become the Word incarnate to live an example for us and demonstrate that He will do anything out of love for us, even enter into humanity and all its suffering, selfishness and self-centered behavior.

Do you recognize God’s love? Do you recognize God’s redemption?
