Psalms 63:1 – October 7, 2020

O God, you are my God-it is you I seek! For you my body yearns; for you my soul thirsts, In a land parched, lifeless, and without water. Psalms 63:1 NABRE

This is a psalm in which the psalmist has a deep desire for God. The quoted verse speaks to how deep the desire for God is in the psalmist. God is the God who is the only God for this psalmist, and the only God the psalmist seeks. Then the psalmist creates a sort of story of how much God is desired, the body yearns for God, as if it is hungry and needing replenishment, the soul is thirsting like a body that has gone days without water, then we read a comparison to a desert, parched, lifeless and without water. We can imagine vividly how much life is missing in the desert which compares to how much the psalmist is in need of God, a fervent desire for God. Then we read of the times the psalmist has spent with God in the temple. The remainder of the psalm speaks of how God has taking care of the psalmist and all people. God is ever present on the mind of the psalmist who knows God will defend, keep safe and victorious all who call upon God. It is a psalm of true love for God, begging God’s presence and praising God for all that is great in life.

The psalm is an example of dependence and trust in God. There is no doubt God is dependable in the life of the palmist who gives us this prayer of praise for God. We can get a true sense that God is in the life of the psalmist, not someone who is a check-in. We should live our life with God as a constant companion, we can depend on God to hear us and respond with the help we need. Trust God, know that you are the most important person to God, always.

Is God your daily companion? Do you praise and thank God for all your life?
