Matthew 13:44 – July 26, 2020

The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Matthew 13:44 NABRE

Jesus is preaching to any and all who will listen. He has been using parables and continues but introduces a type of comparison to speak about the kingdom of heaven. First we see the idea of a hidden treasure, it is not seen by everyone, just as the kingdom of heaven is not seen by all. Like a treasure buried in a field, something of great value is present in the kingdom Jesus proclaims, but few are aware of it. There seems to be an urgency in the response of the one who finds the hidden treasure in the field, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, requiring a great sacrifice be made to obtain the treasure. The person sells all he has and buys the field. The kingdom of heaven is a priceless treasure that completely alters one’s priorities in life. Things that were important enough to possess are not so important, no longer carrying the weight they once were perceived to have in light of the wealth of Jesus’ kingdom. We see a joyful abandonment of everything in order to obtain the treasure. This recalls how the disciples left everything to follow Jesus. It also stands in contrast to the many in Israel who remain indifferent to Jesus’ kingdom announcement, especially the religious leadership and those who fight against it.

We are invited to join the kingdom of heaven, not some future geographic place, but a state of consciousness. For us who know Jesus the kingdom is not hidden, it is revealed through the message of Jesus. But now we must sell everything, abandon everything, detach ourselves from everything to obtain Jesus’ kingdom. Not so easily done.

Are you aware of Jesus’ great treasure? Are you willing to sell everything to obtain Jesus’ kingdom?

For us who know Jesus the kingdom is not hidden, it is revealed through the message of Jesus. But now we must sell everything, abandon everything, detach ourselves from everything to obtain Jesus' kingdom. Click To Tweet
