Mark 9:23 – July 17, 2020

Jesus said to him, “‘If you can!’ Everything is possible to one who has faith.” Mark 9:23 NABRE

A crowd approached Jesus, including a father of a young son possessed by a mute spirit. The boy’s symptoms resemble those of epilepsy, he is seized and thrown down foaming at the mouth, grinding his teeth and becoming rigid. The man expected Jesus’ disciples to have success in exorcising the spirit before coming to Jesus, but they were unable to do so. The father approaches Jesus hoping Jesus will be able to cure his son. The father says to Jesus, “if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” This leads to the main point of the story which comes in Jesus reply, “‘If you can!’ Everything is possible to one who has faith.” The man expressed a cautious, tentative hope that perhaps Jesus might be able to help somehow. Jesus responds with a resounding call to confident trust. “If Jesus can” is never in question! There is no limit to Jesus’ power, the only limitation is the doubt created by unbelief. Jesus is stressing that the human capacity to do anything is possible, particularly opening the door to God’s mighty works through bold faith. Jesus has said everything is possible, and also reaffirms the power of faith by adding, “All things are possible for God.” (Mark 10:27)  This power is available to all whose faith is unflinching.

Of course the challenge for us is to have a bold faith, remove all doubt and put our complete trust in God. When we are faithful there is no wavering in our ability to do whatever is needed in the name of God. In this example Jesus cures a boy and teaches His disciples how they should have cured the boy. Jesus healed many, we are fortunate to know of the healings that come with a teaching we are able learn.

How do you rate your faith? Can you do anything through God?
