Psalms 119:7 – July 18, 2020

I will praise you with sincere heart as I study your righteous judgments. Psalms 119:7 NABRE

This psalm has to do with the Law of God, which is mentioned in every verse. It is a psalm that can be used as prayerful meditation. It can be used to give thanks, make supplication and to seek wisdom through contemplation of God’s goodness. For the Christian this prayer through the context of Moses and the Law may seem unrelated to Christians but in fact we depend on the scriptures to hear from the elders and the prophets that spoke for God and lead us to hearing Jesus Christ as the definitive word of God. The Hebrew people depended upon their leaders and prophets for psalms like this one to be available for their prayer. But when Jesus Christ came along we receive the Word of God made flesh, His person, His words, His teaching, His death and the resurrection as the eternal Word of God addressed to all, bringing light and salvation. This psalm opens declaring blessed are those who are blameless, blessed are those who keep the law, and we read in the quoted verse that it is with a sincere heart that we seek to be righteous and depend on God’s judgement. The history of the people of God is one where we slowly learn to follow the law, seek the will of God and move to a moment in time when God’s only Son came to tell us the One who gave us the Law, the One who makes righteous judgment is our Father and wants what is best for us. The movement from law to love is traversed over years as a people, and today we only need to love to be righteous. Love fulfills the law and praises God at the same time.

The law is still relevant but it is not needed if we love. When we love, all that the law encompasses is included. Love fulfills everything God wants for us.

Do you pray with the psalms? Do you follow the law or follow love?
