John 15:10 – July 14, 2020

If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. John 15:10 NABRE

Jesus has been speaking to His disciples about a tight relationship between them, Himself and the Father. He begins by speaking about a vine and those who are attached will bear good fruit. Jesus invites the disciples to remain in love with Him. He says, as the Father loves me, I love you. Jesus’ love for the disciples is as deep as His love for His Father. After expressing His love for His disciples Jesus asks them to keep His commandments, He asks them to return His love by being obedient. Jesus goes on to tell them that the commandment He wants them to keep is to love. When Jesus loves He doesn’t need a commandment, He does it naturally. He loves His Father, He loves His disciples the same way and His love is true. Jesus’ love is like breathing for Him. But Jesus disciples, and us, our love doesn’t seem to come naturally. Jesus encourages our love by letting us know we are loved, not only by Jesus, but also the Father. Jesus’ love is the self-giving love of God Himself. This love creates a communion of love; God the Father, Jesus, the disciples and we are invited into this communion of love. Jesus proves His love when he dies on the cross for others. Jesus lets them know that His love for the Father is demonstrated by His commitment to obey the Father. Being obedient to the Father Jesus remains in the Father’s love and if we keep Jesus commandments we will remain in Jesus love.

We need to love, and as lovers we are happy to do all that Jesus asks of us. When we love we submit to the one we love by doing what they ask, obeying their commands. To love others means we make them important, and give all we have for them.

How do you demonstrate your love? Whose circle of communion do you want to be part of?
