Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.” Matthew 9:37-38 NABRE
Jesus was travelling around the towns and villages, He was teaching about the Kingdom of Heaven, curing disease and illness. Large crowds would meet Him and He recognized that they were troubled and abandoned. They were meant to be shepherded by leaders who love them and care for them. But Jesus recognizes the God anointed shepherds were more concerned about their own well-being than anyone else’s. Jesus knew the hearts of the leaders, and even though there were shepherds who were responsible for the people they were flawed in their teaching, bad at caring for the people and lacking in empathy and compassion. Jesus knew there were many who needed good leaders and Jesus knew there weren’t enough. Speaking to His disciples He says there are many people who need leading, they need guidance, they need to know they are loved and cared for. Telling them about the many needy people Jesus asks His disciples to pray to God to send good shepherds. If no one cares for the people then how can the Kingdom of Heaven ever come to them? There are some who think this message is about sending new priests who will care for and teach the people. Having more priests is good, but it is not enough; laborers as Jesus refers to them must come from everywhere.
People need someone to walk with them, as Jesus did on the Road to Emmaus (see Luke 24:13-35.) All who are followers of Jesus are challenged to walk with others who aren’t as familiar with Jesus, the message of the Gospel and the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus challenges each and every follower to befriend someone and lead them to spiritual growth and to love them.
Are you a good shepherd? Do you love others?
Jesus challenges each and every follower to befriend someone and lead them to spiritual growth and to love them.
