Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Matthew 24:35 NABRE
We read the words of Jesus as He is teaching His disciples. Jesus has spoken much leading up to this verse about end of times, not knowing the hour, the final tribulation, but this comment about heaven and earth passing away should really disturb those listening. I suppose we can be a bit disturbed by it as well. None of us really think that the end of the earth will happen in our life time, no matter what contribution humanity is making toward weakening earthly necessities. Listening to the words of Jesus for some time, we are comfortable with the language of an end to the earth, but are we as aware of the heavens going away? Jesus says both pass away. I recall from my childhood bible stories that heaven is where we go when we die if we believe in Jesus (and lived good lives, although I think the nuns added this condition.) But Jesus clearly teaches the end of time changes everything, everything ends, the earth and heaven. John in the Revelations speaks of a new heaven and a new earth, “… The former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.” (21:1) There are descriptions of this new heaven and new earth, they seem to be one place together and life there is all good. Paul speaks about new identities but we are not changed so much that we don’t remember who we are. Peter speaks about it being a place where righteous dwells (2 Peter 3:13), a description used for anything pleasing to God in the scriptures.
It astounds me that we can know so much and at the same time so little. If Jesus words do not pass away, and we are spoken into creation through the word of God, could it be another promise of eternal life?
