Psalms 138:2 – July 8, 2020

I bow low toward your holy temple; I praise your name for your mercy and faithfulness. For you have exalted over all your name and your promise. Psalms 138:2 NABRE

This is a psalm of praise for benefits received, the psalmist knows good in his life because of God. The message of this psalm is all the kings of the earth should praise the Lord. The verse begins with the reverence of the psalmist to God, bowing low toward the temple, the people believing God is in the temple. The psalmist praises the name of God. God is merciful and faithful, and everything of God is honorable and good. The name of God is holy and must be respected. God has even given a command to reverence His name, “You shall not invoke the name of the LORD, your God, in vain.” (Exodus 20:7) Many see this as a prohibition of using God’s name falsely, swearing in God’s name as in some legal proceeding, using God’s name to make a vow that is not a true commitment. It means more. We should see God’s name as something to be reverenced. There was a tradition whenever God’s name is spoken people bow their head, recognizing the holiness of the name which represents God. We don’t have the same respect today that once was given to the name of God. Losing respect for God’s name we have lost respect for much. We don’t see or know the sacred today as people once did. Revealing His name God says, “I am who I am.” (Exodus 3:13) God has existed from the beginning, and will always exist, and we who are loved by God should begin our love for God by honoring the name of God and recognizing the awe of His eternal existence.

Names meant more than a label for a person in the past. Today we make up names we think sound nice. Saying God’s name we call upon the creator of everything, we should be in awe.

How do you use God’s name? Are you in awe of God?
