John 6:68 – May 2, 2020

Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. John 6:68 NABRE

Jesus has a great multitude of people following in this section of the Gospel of John, more people than usual as Jesus performed a miracle feeding thousands of these people. Jesus began speaking to them and many found His words impossible to accept; little by little they walked away, unable to live with His teaching. In this moment we get the impression that all have left Him except the Twelve who He called from the beginning. He turns to them and asks, “Do you also want to leave?” Peter the spokesman responds by answering His question with a question, “… to whom shall we go?” For Peter and the others,Jesus has the words that bring eternal life, apart from Jesus there is nothing worthwhile. Peter and the others are convinced that Jesus is the Holy One of God, the Messiah, the Anointed, the Christ, the Son of God, the one for whom all of Israel has been waiting. In another section of the gospels Jesus would respond to Peter, you have not understood this on your own but from the Father.  This response from Peter puts hope in Jesus, these guys are starting to get it, starting to understand Jesus’ divine role. But of course we will discover later that at the first sign of trouble Peter and the others scatter not trusting what they know in this moment. If we find the one who makes life most worthwhile we should not move away from that person, ever!

Many people today believe Jesus is the one, though not all people. Sometimes even the ones who do believe have difficulty living as Jesus lived; selfless and self-giving. We have so much knowledge about Jesus from those who were with Him every day and yet, many of us do not live as if He is all we need.

Do you want eternal life? What are you willing to do for eternal life?
