John 10:14 – May 3, 2020

I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, John 10:14 NABRE

The relationship between the shepherd and the sheep is one of presence. The shepherd communicates with the sheep through sound but also through his physical presence. The sheep are calm and peaceful when the shepherd is in view, but fearful and timid when he is not. Sheep like boundaries, they like feeling safe and secure, they don’t do well without fences, or with strangers in their midst, even a small poodle can panic a herd of sheep. But the shepherd is always there for the sheep, he is their safety and security, their peace and calm.  Jesus says He is the Good Shepherd, He will give his life for the sheep, He does so by communicating with them, giving Himself to them and risking His life for them. Jesus is a shepherd who puts the sheep’s needs before His own, He seeks the health and safety of the sheep above all else, He risks everything for the sheep. He is a shepherd who leads His sheep to a better place, and provides a life of fullness and love. Jesus is present to the sheep, He knows each one and He reveals Himself so the sheep know Him as well. We are His sheep. He is our Shepherd.

In this time of pandemic we need a good shepherd. It seems in countries where there is strong, caring, present leadership, the citizens are doing well, and the fight against the virus is united and effective. Certain other countries seem to lack coherent leadership, leaders who ask for sacrifice of themselves as well as their people and the virus seems to have control. Without a good shepherd no group of people, be it a country or a church can succeed. It is why Jesus taught this message, a good shepherd knows the sheep and knows how to lead them to safety. Be a good shepherd in your community.

Do you lead yourself and others? Are you able to bring peace to others?
