Psalms 86:5 – January 31, 2020

Lord, you are good and forgiving, most merciful to all who call on you. Psalms 86:5 NABRE

This is no ordinary psalm, David the author, himself calls it a prayer. The verses of this psalm describe the essential purpose of prayer, which is not to obtain some desired assistance from God, but to assure the supplicant that God is near in all moments, especially during distress and danger. The awareness of God’s close concern and attention to us and our trouble is itself the response we need to our prayer.  David composed this prayer to protect him from his enemies, especially from King Saul. David didn’t want mere victory over his foes, he wanted to witness to the glory of God in the entire world. By giving God credit for his safety and the defeat of his foes, David is glorifying God. David opens asking God to listen, for he is poor and needy, he wants God to guard his soul. He begs for God’s favor, and ultimately David proclaims, “Lord, you are good and forgiving, most merciful to all who call on you.” God is good to all people, especially those who themselves are good and righteous. God is forgiving, to anyone who sins and asks for forgiveness, repenting from their sin. God forgives every time we ask, if he only forgave once he would be no different than us.

Since God forgives us constantly, without hesitation, He is the very essence of forgiveness. God is merciful to all who call upon God. We may show mercy when someone calls out for mercy and seeks forgiveness. We may forgive but we might still keep our distance so the offending person can’t repeat their offense. We forgive but don’t forget. God forgives and trust us again, God’s mercy is far greater than anything we can provide, God forgives and forgets, trusting us completely.

Do you realize how good and forgiving God is? Can you receive mercy from God?

Since God forgives us constantly, without hesitation, He is the very essence of forgiveness. God is merciful to all who call upon God. Click To Tweet
