Ezekiel 34:1 – August 17, 2022

Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy and say to them: To the shepherds, thus says the Lord GOD: Woe to the shepherds of Israel who have been pasturing themselves!a Should not shepherds pasture the flock? Ezekiel 34:1 NABRE

God speaking to the prophet Ezekiel addresses problems with the religious leaders, the priests and leaders of the community. God refers to these leaders as shepherds. Shepherds are to care and protect the sheep. Nothing can be more important to a shepherd than the sheep. The shepherds entire being is about the sheep, they are not a shepherd without the sheep. God recognizes these leaders are not good shepherds. The shepherds feed themselves but they do feed the sheep, they do not strengthen the weak, heal the sick not help the injured and they do not seek the lost. For God these are the responsibilities of the shepherd. When Jesus speaks about what we must do for one another, these are the tasks He mentions.

God is calling out the shepherds of Israel and declaring He will take care of the sheep. “I will take my sheep out of their hand and put a stop to their shepherding my flock, so that these shepherds will no longer pasture them. I will deliver my flock from their mouths so it will not become their food.Ezekiel 34:10 God Himself will take care of us, as we should be cared for, with love and feeding. Allow God to be your Good Shepherd.

Are you a shepherd who cares? Are others more important to you then you are to yourself?
