Genesis 18:23 – July 24, 2022

Then Abraham drew near and said: “Will you really sweep away the righteous with the wicked?” Genesis 18:23 NABRE

Abraham intercedes for Sodom and Gomorrah in terms of a collective responsibility. In ancient times entire people shared the same fate even though not all sinned, for the sin of some affected all. Abraham thought if there were enough just people in the city (Abraham went as low as ten good people) God would not have destroyed it. This way of thinking also shows how the salvation of many (even sinners) can come through the faithfulness of a few. This establishes a way to see the salvation of humanity brought about by the obedience of one person alone, Jesus Christ. Much as Abraham argues for Sodom and Gomorrah to be saved because of a few righteous people, the church argues for an atonement theory through Jesus Christ, saving all because of His righteousness. The story of scripture is God saving the righteous and encouraging all people to be righteous. God ultimately destroys Sodom and Gomorrah, saving those who are righteous but it brings to mind the idea that if enough people are righteous it can be an influence on all people and infect a righteousness which God desires making the world a place of happiness and joy.

We may not believe we have much influence; we see sinfulness and throw up our hands saying what does integrity and honesty matter. Too much information comes our way through media of all sorts that demonstrates it is not wrong to be dishonest, to take what you want and to push for more and more power. Seeing people compromise their integrity is evident every day. But, we can start a revolution of righteousness, if we do what is right and use our life to influence for good.

Do you believe you can be an influence? Do you live with absolute integrity?

Much information comes our way through media demonstrating there are no consequences for dishonesty. But, we can start a revolution of righteousness, if we do what is right and use our life to influence for good. Click To Tweet
