Matthew 5:15 – June 7, 2022

Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Matthew 5:15 NABRE

Jesus teaches about being someone who draws attention to His movement, be a light in the world, live in such a way your light shines and those who see wonder what you have and desire the same. The beginning of the Jesus movement people looked at the early followers and said why are they so joyful, content, confident, good, and authentic. Seeing how people are different coming to know Jesus’, others want the same experiences so they too can be transformed. Jesus wants us to change, not to worship Him or declare He is God. We are encouraged to be like Jesus, knowing there is nothing Jesus is we cannot become. It helps to think of Jesus as a movement. We are to move ourselves from a secular person struggling to keep up with others in finances, glory, and recognition becoming like Jesus in seeking the lowest place and raising up others, seeking humility and finding ways to honor others, in pointing to God as the One who gives all power and glory. When we change, people notice and they become curious as to why we are different, better. We are to let our light shine for all to see.

An important aspect of changing is to recognize there is suffering which comes from our clinging, from believing we have control and from falling for the things of the ego, which wants to declare itself the best. Jesus teaches we must die to these things in order to be His light. We can choose not to cling, not seek control and to eliminate the ego, this is called dying in Jesus’ teaching, let the self that seeks human glory die. Be a light but first die and be reborn from above.

Are you a light? Do you let your light shine?

Jesus teaches we must die in order to be His light. We must choose not to cling, not seek control and to eliminate the ego, letting the 'us' seeking human glory die. Be a light but first die and be reborn from above. Click To Tweet
