John 19:30 – June 6, 2022

When Jesus had taken the wine, he said, “It is finished.” And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit. John 19:30 NABRE

John records events and words of Jesus crucifixion. In this passage Jesus announces His mother is John’s mother, and John becomes Mary’s son. Jesus’ mother becomes part of the community, no longer only Jesus’ mother but a full member of the disciples of Jesus. Often, we read Jesus putting a premium on being a disciple and member of the community, often more so than being a member of a family. Jesus then announces He is thirsty and they wet His lips with a little wine. After doing this Jesus declares it is finished and He hands over His spirit. Many have said this is not really the end and wonder why Jesus might say it is finished. There are some who believe this was the final cup of wine for the Passover meal and now the Passover is finished. Of course, Jesus transforms into Christ in the moment of death and resurrection, so it is also a beginning. We may have to wait until our next life before understanding what “it is finished” means.

I am struck by the fact Jesus hands over His spirit, indicating His death. This writing makes it Jesus’ choice to give up His spirit. We can read about death experiences where a dying patient will remain alive until someone they are waiting for arrives, or they remain alive until a love one gives permission for them to die. Jesus is giving this kind of example. He must complete certain things before His final moment and when He does, he gives over His spirit. We shouldn’t leave things undone; we often regret more the things we haven’t done than the things we have done badly. Finish your mission, then when it is time give over your spirit.

Will you be ready to give over your spirit? What must you accomplish in life?
