Luke 1:30 – March 25, 2022

Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.” Luke 1:30 NABRE

Luke writes the story of Mary hearing from an angel about the conception and birth of a Son, who is to be called Jesus. It is a beautiful message, telling of God becoming incarnate and doing what is only believed through faith, entering humanity. Mary hears beautiful words about her future Son. He will be great and called the Son of the Most High and His kingdom will have no end. The angel also says Mary is favored, God thinks of her as very special. Angels are messengers, therefore what Mary hears from the angel she can consider as coming from God. After the shock of hearing what the angel has told her, she is likely feeling very blessed, and honored to have God’s words spoken to her with such admiration and grace. She loves God and knows God loves her too.

Though Mary hears these special words directly from an angel, all mothers can know God has the same words for them. Mothers have found favor with God and the child they will bear is a child of God. God has blessed mothers with the ability to have and love children, and along with the father to bring a child of the Most High God into the world. All those born are human and share in God’s divine nature (see 2 Peter 1:4.) We say Jesus is fully divine but each child of God is also divine and so when God gifts a family with a child, God is saying I have found favor in them and they receive my grace. Depending on how we hear the words spoken to Mary we can imagine them spoken to our mother’s as well. There is no one who is not a child of God, human and divine, cared for by God as much as He does for Mary’s Son, Jesus.

Do you recognize your divinity, found in your body and soul? Can you imagine God speaking to your mother as He spoke to Mary?
