Matthew 7:11 – March 10, 2022

If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him. Matthew 7:11 NABRE

Jesus is teaching about the kind of Father we have in heaven. In order to help those listening understand, Jesus compares our heavenly Father to earthly fathers. Jesus will admit that all people have a wicked, or sinful nature. We tend to fall into sin or act with an immoral behavior. Jesus recognizes even in these circumstances an earthly father who has a hungry child will give them something to eat rather than hand them a stone or a snake. Jesus knows even in our selfish behaviors we will take care and look after our children who depend on us. Then Jesus turns it back to God, the Father, who is good in all things. If we, God’s children need something, God our Father will out do earthly fathers and give us not only what we need but much more. God is an abundant giver and even more abundant when responding to the needs of His children.

Jesus wants to expand our vision of God in all His goodness. Imagine a good good Father untouched by evil, how much He is willing to provide to His children. We may have an image of God from the Hebrew Scriptures who is a judging and condemning God. Or we may have had a bad experience with our earthly father and can’t image a good father. Jesus turns us away from the image of God created through the history of the Jews and desires to change our image of fathers generally, describing God, a Father who wants a loving relationship with His children. God loves, and care for His own, and in fact all things in the world. Jesus; helps us understand our heavenly Father more accurately.

What do you think of God as Father? How is/was your relationship with your father?
