Mark 9:19 – February 21, 2022

He said to them in reply, “O faithless generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I endure you? Bring him to me.” Mark 9:19 NABRE

Jesus is approached by a man whose son has a mute spirit, unable to speak. The man expresses to Jesus that he brought His son to Jesus disciples and they were unable to heal him. Jesus expresses disappointment in His disciples, and turns to them declaring they are faithless, not only them but in a broad stroke declares all the generation to be faithless. It is striking that Jesus in a way reprimands the disciples. Witnessing the disciples in scripture we are often left with the impression that they fought among themselves, and of course we are struck by their lack of understanding about the message Jesus tells them about His future arrest, death and resurrection. He said to them many times He would be handed over to men who will kill Him and in three days He will rise (see Mark 9:31.) Our impression is the disciple’s faith is not strong and their thinking about redemption is fixed from early in their life. When Jesus speaks about faith, He has such a strong belief in His Father, believing God will do something for Him is a fact, His faith is so strong that God has His complete trust. Jesus rarely sees this faith in those close to Him or in the entire generation of people He meets. I think we are still this way.

Faith is a belief in the person Jesus, and His message pointing to God. We read the bible as if it is a book of how to live, if we are able. Jesus said love enemies, we do this superficially. Do we always meet an enemy and show love? If we try to feed the hungry do we only give from our excess. Jesus’ faith is total, and we do not have it in this generation.

What are the limits of your faith? Do you live in complete trust of God?
