Luke 1:3 – January 23, 2022

I too have decided, after investigating everything accurately anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus, Luke 1:3 NABRE

Luke begins his writing describing how he investigates everything he writes and writes in an orderly fashion, a sequence from the beginning of Jesus’ life to His resurrection. Luke is not an eyewitness to the events but has received the stories from others who have heard them from eyewitnesses. The Apostles would share about their time with Jesus and these stories would be passed from person to person. The stories were passed on until such time as they were written down. It is likely the stories continued to be told from person to person but in time the definitive representation of these stories are the gospels in the bible. Often scholars believe Matthew’s and Luke’s gospels have source material from Mark and perhaps another source that we don’t’ have today referred to as “Q.” But, it is only Luke who claims to have done an investigation, presumably verifying all that was shared. Luke is trying to write a history because of his investigation. Many today believe the gospel writings are the inspired word of God, meaning those who wrote were inspired by the Holy Spirit to include and say what God wanted carried on in time.

I think the gospels are inspired with an aspect of inspiration occurring in the listening. Some of the stories contradict one another which allows room for doubters to claim falsity. But I believe God uses His word to inspire each of us, all with differing intellectual levels and at different milestones on our journey to the kingdom of God. These facts require we hear the word differently from one another. No doubt God considers this in the inspiring. No matter who you are, you can be inspired.

Do you believe the bible is God’s inspired word? What has God’s inspiration said to you?
