Luke 1:44 – December 19, 2021

For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Luke 1:44 NABRE

Mary learns her relative Elizabeth will be an instrument of God is with child for six months already. God blesses Elizabeth with a child who becomes John the Baptist. Elizabeth is past child bearing years and when Mary hears she is pregnant from an angel she decides she must go and be with her. Mary travels immediately to see Elizabeth and helps her in the final months of pregnancy. We can imagine being with Elizabeth gives young Mary an elder for wisdom and a likeminded instrument of God to share blessing stories. At Mary’s arrival and greeting we read the baby in Elizabeth’s womb leaps for joy. Theologians will make a comparison between King David who dances for joy when the Ark of the Covenant enters Jerusalem (2 Samuel 6:16) and Elizabeth’s child, we can read Elizabeth herself cries with joy at Mary’s coming. This singing and dancing before the child in Mary’s womb makes a comparison to the joy felt by those when the Ark of the Covenant, the presence of God, is brought before them. Mary is thought of as the new Ark of the Covenant, carrying God in her womb.

These birth and pregnancy stories are fun to read. We can assume the meeting and greeting of Mary and Elizabeth must have made a great impression for them to remember and retell the story years later when the story of Jesus is being captured by Luke, who we know from His opening investigated everything accurately anew (see Luke 1:3.) Today I wonder what we can learn. Is there an awakening of our singing and dancing when we meet God as King David did? Are we more joyful because we meet Jesus? This is the promise, even babies can recognize it.

Does knowing Jesus make you leap for joy? Does this story help you believe in Jesus as God?
