Jesus has been talking about the fall of Jerusalem and now He begins to speak about the end of history. In the hearts of Jews, Jerusalem and the temple are the seat of God, if they are destroyed what happens to God? Jesus says no one knows the day or hour of the end of history, not the angels nor the Son, only the Father knows the end of time. Jesus still will go through suffering and death and for many close to Him this will feel like the end of everything. His death could be the beginning of the end of history and we who look back several millennia can say it is a long beginning. Looking forward time may span several thousand millennia and today will look like the beginning of Jesus’ movement. We truly do not know when history will end, which should be a message to be on watch. We would hate to have the end of history come when we are not in good standing in the eyes of God. God holds the timetable because what He desires is not calculation but vigilance. If we know tomorrow is the end of history we will do everything we can to be righteous. God desires we do everything we can to be righteous every day, without knowing when history will end. It is through vigilance the kingdom of God will be created and all will benefit from its full existence.
Be alert and watchful. Look for every opportunity to use whatever power you have to serve and lift up others. In God’s eyes the people at the top are those who serve the weakest in the eyes of the world. To be vigilant we must work on God’s agenda, God’s will and in so doing we will be ready for the end of history.
