Matthew 5:2 – November 1, 2021

He began to teach them, saying: Matthew 5:2 NABRE

Jesus begins a public ministry and once He is somewhat known He provides a teaching titled the Sermon on the Mount. Matthew captures Jesus’ teachings quite extensively. He begins by declaring Jesus saw the crowds and He went up the mountain. Matthew allows us to compare the prophet Moses in the Hebrew Scriptures and Jesus. We read, “… no prophet has arisen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,” (Deuteronomy 34:10.) Moses has a deep relationship with God, he knew God. Matthew shows a similarity between Moses and Jesus. Pharaoh wanted to kill Moses as a baby, Jesus life is threaten by King Herod as a baby. Moses goes up the mountain to receive revelation and give it to the people. Jesus went up the mountain and spoke the word of God, He began teaching them. Moses spoke for God but Jesus speaks as God. Moses receives and gives God’s word in the Ten Commandments, Jesus doesn’t receive the law but teaches it. Jesus words provide commendation for those who have taken a certain path in life and promises future consolation to those who struggle. The blessings Jesus speaks begin in this life and will be fully realized in the heavenly kingdom. Moses set boundaries so that people can come to know of God, and Jesus makes people know God. Following Moses can bring people to a place where they can know of God, but Jesus tells people about God. Jesus leads people to meet God.

Jesus began to teach and His words are meant to form our lives. If we live Jesus’ teaching we will know God. If we live Jesus teaching we will be with God and God with us. Moses is a prophet who speaks the words of God. Jesus is a prophet who is the Word of God, listen to Him.

Do you listen to Jesus’ teaching? Are you open to know God’s Word?

If we live Jesus teaching we will be with God and God with us. Moses is a prophet who speaks the words of God. Jesus is a prophet who is the Word of God, listen to Him. Click To Tweet
