At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here. Luke 11:32 NABRE
Jesus has been challenged again and again by the people crowding around Him and in this moment they ask for a sign to demonstrate He is from God. Jesus criticizes them indicating they are truly an evil generation, comparing them to other generations that lost faith in God and demanded evidence. Jesus has spoken six times against this generation and because He is being rejected, frequently warns “this generation” about the coming judgment, when others will join together to condemn them for failing to hear and repent. The group Jesus mentions is the Ninevites who God condemns because they were evil, however hearing God’s condemnation from the prophet Jonah they repent. When the Ninevites hear the preaching of Jonah they repent, make a change, and are no longer condemned, in fact they will be part of the judgement against “this generation” that is not hearing and repenting.
Jonah, sent by God, does preach in a manner that has the Ninevites repent and yet someone greater than Jonah is in the midst of the people of “this generation,” namely Jesus, the Son of God. Jesus is a Prophet, Priest and King and is the one whose wisdom people need to hear as He is the embodiment of Wisdom. As we read in Proverbs, “Now, children, listen to me; happy are they who keep my ways. Listen to instruction and grow wise, do not reject it!” (8:32-33) Wisdom is present with God at creation, and rejecting the Wisdom of God is a great offense, one in which judgement will be cast upon the offender. Don’t be a generation that does not hear the Word of God, listen and repent.
Do you hear God’s word and listen?
