Luke 11:27 – October 9, 2021

While he was speaking, a woman from the crowd called out and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.” Luke 11:27 NABRE

After responding to a question a woman interrupts Jesus with an intended praise and honoring of His mother. Jesus so impresses that even though His family is unknown He brings them honor by word and deed. Jesus rarely accepts compliments when they come to Himself or His family, He generally points back to God. In this case He responds by saying, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it. For Jesus, priority is always given to God; family and friends come after God. But it does makes sense to honor Jesus’ mother as she had the faith to agree to God’s maternity request, even saying in an early prayer that people will call her blessed, as this woman has shouted. It is notable that Jesus doesn’t treat His mother any more special than any other child of God. For God all mothers hold a special place. They have a special understanding of creation, God creates humanity and mothers bring God’s work into the world. God never singles out any one mother because every mother is amazing and made in God’s image. It is not to say Jesus’ mother isn’t special but rather we should extend that specialness and blessing to all who agree to be mothers. They are the first disciple makers, their wombs are blessed and their breast nursing God’s own children.

Mary gave a model response to God, but in reality every yes to motherhood is a yes to God. Jesus’ response hearing yes to motherhood is likely the same as He said to this woman who shouts, but there is no doubt the special role of mother in the kingdom of God is critical. We all have to use our gifts and we all must hear the word of God and observe it.

Who comes first in your world? What blessing does your mother deserve?
