Luke 8:17 – September 20, 2021

For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light. Luke 8:17 NABRE

Jesus is teaching about God’s word, using a lamp as a metaphor. “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path.” (Psalms 119:105) The lamp Jesus is speaking about is an image of God’s word. Anyone hearing God’s word should embrace and understand it and when they do they become filled with light which becomes a visible lamp so that others may see their light. Anyone granted the mysteries of the knowledge of the kingdom of God must make it known. Jesus declares lamps are placed on lampstands so those who enter may see. Thus becoming a lamp enlightens others so that they too may be saved. The light makes all things visible, all secrets known, the light will show all. So it is important to listen and to hear God’s word, so that we may be lights that make everything visible, understood and illuminated. Light is important, in fact critical, seeing depends on light.

Imagine if every word Jesus has spoken is even more brilliant than we can even imagine. John tells us Jesus is the light, He enlightens us and enlightens the path before us. Jesus then becomes the lamp we set on the lampstand so all may see, that all may become visible and all will be known. Let’s particularly point this light at ourselves. Aren’t we the last to know our own flaws, our own goodness, aren’t we dependent on others to tell us of our light? If we want to be lamps we must take in the light Christ offers, we must know His word, and we must illuminate His word for others, especially in how we live.

Are you a lamp unto yourself? Do people see because of you?

If we want to be lamps we must take in the light Christ offers, we must know His word, and we must illuminate His word for others, especially in how we live. Click To Tweet
