Jesus claims to be the bread sent down from heaven and those listening object to this claim because they know His earthly family. Jesus hears this as grumbling similar to the Jews in the desert during the Exodus, grumbling against the Lord and Moses in the wilderness. Jesus is essentially telling His listeners that their hearts are as hard as those how murmured in the desert. Jesus points out that no one can come to Him unless the Father who sent Him draws them to Him, and Jesus will raise them up on the last day. Jesus concludes with the assertion that whoever believes in Him will have eternal life. All people have access to God’s gift of eternal life through Jesus, we receive this gift already in the present through faith in Him.
It seems simple, believe in Jesus and access eternal life. Faith and belief are not difficult or challenging by any means. Sometimes we are challenged through doubt. If we work every day on belief we should have the strength to believe and receive eternal life. But eternal life is like an entry into the kingdom of God. We can do so much more and be more joy filled now as well as becoming recipients of a mansion in God’s kingdom. We can receive grace each day, blessings from God and look forward to not requiring faith to know God but actually seeing God. Eternal life is good, but it is only the beginning of all God wants to give to us. Believe in Jesus, receive eternal life. Live like Jesus and receive so much more. Don’t stop at belief but become a disciple who works for the kingdom of God here and now and you will receive it.
