Matthew 17:17 – August 7, 2021

Jesus said in reply, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I endure you? Bring him here to me.” Matthew 17:17 NABRE

Jesus has sent His disciples out to heal the sick and expel demons, but we see in this story from Matthew a man has approached Jesus about healing his son, because Jesus’ disciples could not heal him. Jesus gives a reprimand because He believes His disciples have little faith. Jesus explains to His followers that they were unable to drive out the demon from the boy because of their little faith. Matthew seems to indicate they have a certain anxiety because they do not trust God to provide for them. Reprimanding His disciples for their little faith Jesus also reminds them that just a small amount of faith moves mountains, a metaphor for doing the impossible. It is trusting God completely, putting everything in God’s hands that makes the impossible possible. Disciples of Jesus never deserve credit for doing the impossible, they only are credited for having faith in God to do the impossible. Without faith God cannot accomplish anything through Jesus’ disciples.

Faith is the power of a disciple, if we have faith we can be God’s instrument in the world. The story of healing a young boy is told that we know trusting God is critical. Faith means we don’t worry about the outcome, we don’t worry about our role in God events, but we trust God to accomplish the impossible. If we allow doubt to creep in, God cannot work through us. Completely trust God, knowing God is there to make the impossible possible.

Has doubt crept into your trust and faith in God? Have you witnessed God doing the impossible through your faith?

Faith means we don't worry about the outcome, we don't worry about our role in God events, but we trust God to accomplish the impossible. If we allow doubt to creep in, God cannot work through us. Click To Tweet
