John 6:34 – August 1, 2021

So they said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” John 6:34 NABRE

John has told the story of Jesus feeding thousands of people. After He leaves them they follow. Jesus says they are not interested in signs but in the food He has provided. People will go through extraordinary feats to satisfy their hunger and it seems these people desired Jesus companionship for the food He could provide. Jesus tells them they should not work for bread that perishes but food that endures for eternal life. Often Hebrew scripture compares following the word of God to food. “How sweet to my tongue is your promise, sweeter than honey to my mouth! (Psalms 119:103) God’s word is sweeter than honey! Jesus tells them to work for food that lasts, bread that changes them and changes those they lead to Jesus. The beginning is to believe in the word He tells them.

It is not clear they or we understand. They ask for the bread, seemingly so they never  hunger. Many today take actual bread and transform it to Jesus body. The bread Jesus wants us to follow; is the word of God, to believe Jesus came from God and to have faith in Jesus the One sent by God. To obtain the bread Jesus offers we must change our hearts to seek God’s kingdom not food for our belly.

What bread do you choose? Where does your belief lie?
