John 11:27 – July 29, 2021

She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.” John 11:27 NABRE

Jesus is called to the village of Martha, Mary and Lazarus, very close friends of His. Lazarus has become very sick and the sisters want Jesus to help him return to good health. But Jesus delays in returning and Lazarus dies. Jesus uses this as an opportunity to teach about resurrection. When Jesus finally arrives in the village Martha runs out to greet him and affirms if Jesus had been present her brother would not have died. Jesus says, “Your brother will rise.” Martha understands this to mean Lazarus will rise in the resurrection at the end of time. Of course Jesus knows He will raise Lazarus immediately and says He is the resurrection and anyone who believes in Him will never die. Jesus asks Martha if she believes. Martha responds with the quoted verse, she has come to believe.

Martha has spent time with Jesus, seen the miracles, heard the words and admires Him with disciples and others. The Jews are waiting for the Messiah, an anointed one sent by God, who will raise up and deliver God’s people from their enemies. This belief from Martha is slow growing and not fully mature in her at this moment. With a deeper understanding she would not call Jesus the Messiah as He is not rescuing the people in the manner they believe. He is a Messiah bringing resurrection, salvation, not from enemies but from death. We can grow in belief like Martha, spending time with Jesus, in His word, watching how He lives and believing in Him as the resurrection, the only one sent by God who has control over life. We must accept life from Jesus, believing we will never die.
