Matthew 13:57 – July 30, 2021

And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and in his own house.” Matthew 13:57 NABRE

Jesus returns to His home town, where He grew up and everyone knows Him and His family. He teaches in the synagogue and the people are astonished, not in a wow great teaching way but more in a where does he get off speaking to us about scripture. They are very suspicious of Jesus, they saw Him grow up and do not view Him as any type of preacher as they are seeing in the synagogue. Offended they do not believe He is a great prophet, they do not accept He is filled with wisdom and the ability to perform mighty deeds. They hear rumors of His great works but feel these are exaggerated. Jesus performs some miracles in Nazareth, but not many. Either He refuses to perform miracles to convince those who oppose Him or it does not happen because of their general lack of faith and unbelief. Jesus is aware no prophet is honored in his own house.

How often are you judged by those who knew you growing up? People from our past “know” we are incapable of greatness and have no new expectorations of us. Often family may be the most guilty, judging who we were, not who we are. Often when we return to our family home we fall in to the same roles we played growing up. However, those who are unaware intimately of our history interact with us as we are, seeing our capabilities not our inabilities. Jesus makes a great point, we can’t go home and be great. Jesus has said without hating mother, father, sister, brother we cannot be a disciple (Luke 14:26). Disciples are transformed, parents and siblings do not see change, they “remember” all our weakness.

Are you a great prophet in your home town? Have you moved away so you may pursue great works?
