Mark 11:23 – May 28, 2021

Amen, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it shall be done for him. Mark 11:23 NABRE

Jesus is teaching His disciples about faith. Faith for Jesus is a total and complete giving over to God, trusting God for everything and doing God’s will in every way. Jesus teaches if we have the kind of faith in God that God has in us we can say to a mountain be lifted up and thrown into the sea and it will be done. Jesus stresses we can have no doubt in our hearts. Can you imagine believing you can speak a mountain into the sea and having no doubt it would happen? I desire strong faith, but in every vision I have, I don’t imagine moving a mountain to the sea. Jesus words on faith present a challenge to every believer. Does Jesus really mean the mountain will move? If so then why do certain prayers seem to go unanswered, especially prayer where entire communities of people are praying for the same intervention from God. To believe, to have faith, is not to work up to a certitude that our prayers will be answered, but rather to enter into a trusting relationship with God, so our prayers may become aligned with the true good God desires for all. The more we are united with God the more God’s desires and priorities become our own and the more we will see how God answers. We should not view God as a jukebox playing every song we select but a being we cling to in trust and prayer that while clinging we are developing a deeper and deeper relationship.

If what you pray for and hold in faith connects with God’s desire for the world we can be assured of His response. But whether God desires what we pray for or not, what is important is seeing God respond, more and more.

Can you move a mountain? What do you think Jesus means by faith?
