John 15:6 – May 2, 2021

Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned. John 15:6 NABRE

Jesus shares a teaching about a vine and branches which is a teaching about having life in Jesus, and being in trouble without connection to Him. Jesus tells us He is the vine, His Father is the vine grower and we are branches on the vine. When we remain attached to the vine then with Jesus we can bear good fruit. Our vocation is to be fruitful, to spread good and joy to all, to be a person who helps others grow and to grow ourselves. Jesus also gives a key look at what happens if we are separated from the vine. Jesus says those who are cut off from the vine will wither and people will gather them up and throw them in the fire. When we are separated from Jesus we are vulnerable, we are alone and alone we can do nothing for others and in fact have difficulty keeping ourselves safe. Jesus tells us that others will come along and take us to the fire, or perhaps lead us to trouble, maybe a life of sinfulness or pure selfishness. Others might be motivated to seek their own pleasure taking advantage of us, using us for their pleasure. Notice it is not Jesus throwing branches into the fire, the unattached are destroyed because they (we) are alone and easy to lead. Being alone is never a position of safety or strength. We are always at risk when we are alone and unable to call on the righteous for help.

On the vine we’re attached to goodness, to the Father through Jesus, we are never alone. On the vine we have good roots, we are nourished, we are satiated constantly. Thankfully with this nourishment we too can be strength and nourishment for others. Away from the vine we are led astray, on the vine we are good for all.

Where do you want to be? Are you connected or alone?
