John 10:37-38 – March 26, 2021

If I do not perform my Father’s works, do not believe me; but if I perform them, even if you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may realize [and understand] that the Father is in me and I am in the Father. John 10:37-38 NABRE

Jesus has claimed identity and equality with God so there is an attempt to stone Him. According to the law the punishment for blasphemy is death by stoning. Jesus tries to bring those interested in stoning back to focusing on the work He has done. He asks which of the works He has done are they trying to stone him for? He says He has come to do the work of His Father and if they do not believe His words, believe His works. Jesus concludes if they look at His works they will realize that the Father is in Jesus and Jesus is in the Father. It is a profound claim about His relationship with His Father, one in which there is communion and mutual indwelling. Jesus wanting to be in touch with His Father looks in and when the Father seeks Jesus He seems to look in as well. This relationship of mutual communion allows for an intimacy, one God seeks with each of us. Jesus has sent the Spirit so God may dwell in us. If we are seeking God we must look in, go deeper into ourselves, understand ourselves better than we ever have, know what we desire more than anything in the world, discover what we need. We are restless, we are searching, we are seeking and we often look at others, or things, or places to satisfy this search. But what we seek is deep within in us, knowing ourselves we discover God within us.

In silence, contemplation, questioning ourselves we journey deeper into our being, we discover everything that will satisfy us is within us. The kingdom of God begins in us, and we are to take what we discover within and share it.

Where do you seek God? How well do you know yourself?

In silence, contemplation, questioning ourselves we journey deeper into our being, we discover everything that will satisfy us is within us. The kingdom of God begins in us. Click To Tweet
