Psalms 59:17 – February 3, 2021

But I shall sing of your strength, extol your mercy at dawn, For you are my fortress, my refuge in time of trouble. Psalms 59:17 NABRE

This psalm speaks from the point of view of David the psalmist who feels he has been unjustly pursued, he is being harassed from a city that has gone pagan and are rising up against him. However he finds a safe place in God, he asks God to deliver him from his enemies, God is his fortress and power. We read in the quoted verse David promises to praise God from the beginning of the day for His protection, seeing God as his refuge. We see that God is the one who has power, and power belongs to God alone who deserves to be praised for His power. Joy will return when God displays His might against the foe and finally and publicly proclaim David king. In the morning David escapes the men pursing him, feeling successful, thanks to God and soon he will rejoice. David is a hero of scripture despite being a flawed person, who has made several rather big sins that might condemn a person without a close relationship to God who forgives. David has shown over and over again that he depends on God, he trusts God and that he knows God will step in on his behalf. David lives his life in the presence of God and knows in his weakness the only place to turn for help is God.

We see in David a life of success and constant falling. David’s close relationship with God should be a witness for us. We should seek to have a close relationship with God and depend on His forgiveness and mercy, knowing God will watch over us including granting our success.

How do you remain close to God? Have you seen God’s assistance in your life?

David's close relationship with God should be a witness for us. We should seek to have a close relationship with God and depend on His forgiveness and mercy, knowing God will watch over us including granting our success. Click To Tweet
